Fitness industry expansion through Big data usage

Nowadays, it’s common to see growing the interest about "big data" and "data analytics", among organisations focus on wellness, since this industry is leveraging this information to drive their programs, policies, and incentives.
Society is increasingly turning to fitness, diet, and healthy lifestyle options. Consequently, the fitness industry is projected as one of the fastest-growing industries in the world.

The usage of big data by the fitness industry is offering to the consumers a personalised service. Thanks to fitness-related Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as fitness bands, heart-rate trackers, and mobile devices available at the market, many fitness organisations like gyms are getting advantage of it and offering to their clients a unique fitness lifestyle like, personalised workout and food lifestyle.

I would like to bring the attention of how IoT devices can track the activities of individuals. It is impressive the specific and accurate information which are generated by the devices, like data about sleep cycle, eating habits, heart rate and physical activities carried out by the user.

Personal trainers can track the progress of individuals by comparing the initial stage to pre-defined goals. Based on the results, they can offer customised workout and diet, and it will help the individual to achieve their results as planned and prevent future injuries and diseases.

Furthermore, we can mention concerning improvements that fitness data brought to the food lifestyle.  Tracking food intake can be done by computer vision technology. The computer vision app can scan the type and amount of food intake, calculating the calories and helping to understand the food consumption and habits daily.

From the information generated, the diet recommendation can be changed based on real results.

In conclusion, it’s noticeable that big data has changed the way we manage, analyse, and leverage data across the fitness industry. However, having good data can be really challenge due to the big quantity of data, number of sources, tracking and management systems and irregularities. Thus, it’s extremely important to choose a good method and software to get useful information from the devices and use it to offer a unique product or service at the competitive market.

Having consumers' information became crucial for companies to be more assertive when creating campaigns and design new products. As you mentioned the Tracker bands, and smart watches are on everybody's arms. And it is easily noticeable how people are frequently sharing their diet and workout progress on social media, as a consequence of that companies can have information about how and when their customers utilize their devices and suggest new features and technologies based in their usage.

  3. Cool point Natalia! Wearables are definitively on the rise, I've even seen smart shoes!! I wonder if they walk for you lol.
But on a more serious note, these devices do make a different in our lives, some more than others of course. In the case of people with serious health issues it can shorten the time between them having to read a huge list of ingredients in microscopic writing just by scanning a code, it could alert or high blood sugar or blood pressure, it could alert emergency services in case a user gets into difficulties and most important of all it can push us to move more in the case of smart watches.
By creating new effective ways to help individuals, marketers can also ride the wave and create and promote products to better suit said individuals.

  4. Hi Natalia,

Thank you so much for sharing this post in the blog!

IoT devices are so popular at the moment and I believe you gave a great insight in how they work and how big data are used. Working with a personal trainer in the gym I attend, I believe it is great that she can personalize my workout through the data gathered! I believe this could be extremely useful for gyms as they can offer a better experience to their customers. It is also great that we can use big data to track our diet and our daily intake of calories for example. I always try to keep track of what I eat and IoT devices make it just so much easier!

Looking forward to read more on this topic in future!
